...All terrain types in Perilous Shores are created by combining fractal noise and gradient. I use this method in all my generators that require a height map (e.g. in the village generator) because it's very simple, easy to parameterize, and gives fairly good results. How good exactly the results are depends on the parameters used and the "quality" of the gradient...
